Top 30 Books and Series of 2014 - #22

NICO BY J.B. HARTNETT

When I was a boy, I met a girl.

She didn’t know it then, but…

She changed me.

Now…..I am a man.

A man who is broken by the stories of the women who come to me.

They are my birds with broken wings.

I help them heal, help them to make them strong, so they can fly free.

Lark changed me. Loved Me. Made Me Strong.

With her, I am free.

I write…
To the girl of the past.
To the girl of my present.
And, the girl of my future.

Dear Dish….

**Although Nico is considered part of The Leaves Series, it can be read as a stand alone**

Ok, so anyone who knows me, knows that I am a HUGE fan of J.B. Harnett. I was hooked with Inky and then Cole. And I must admit I was really intrigued with where Julie was going to go with Nico. We had only seen a glimpse of him in Inky's story as the guy who did her Tree and Leaf tattoos. Let me just tell you right now, this book is full of emotion, every kind you can think of and hope there would be in a book. Inky and Cole were amazing books but Nico blew me away.

Nico has the world on his shoulders. He takes care of what he calls his "birds" the women who have gone to hell and back and with Nico's help, finds a way to bury the pain and emotion in the past. Some he sees only once, others he continues a long relationship with.

Nico grew up in a family that was always helping others. His mom and pop were always showing compassion and love to those around them. So why wouldn't Nico have that same compassion for those around him too. The only problem is that Nico has no outlet, no one to share in the pain that he takes on from his birds. After years of whoring around and trying to get lost in others and a life changing experience Nico is ready to open himself up.

Lark has been a lost soul of her own. With her parents dying when she was young, an overprotective "sister" and an ex-boyfriend who told her she was nothing. Lark has issues with trusting those around her. That is until she meets Nico. There is this connection that neither of them can deny. They both have pasts that need to be cleared but maybe together they can find what they have both been searching for.

This book pulled me in from the very beginning and I just could not put it down. Julie has a way of storytelling that is sarcastic and profound all in one. There is humor and comic relief in Nico's friends Teensy and Zack and his interaction with them, so its not all heavy. But there is a lot going on in this book that will make your heart ache and wonder how someone could survive. It's a beautiful love story about survival and finding your soul mate, the one you were meant for.

Julie is a Southern California native, a fan of a really good story (preferably romance with a happily ever after), really good pie (preferably pumpkin) and copious amounts of coffee (preferably Folgers).
She has always enjoyed writing and at one time thought she could be a singer songwriter...the 'writer' part is the one that stuck.
Julie is obsessed with pi...the equation(and the food). She's allergic to cats and cantaloupe and hates mushrooms...so if you ever want to give her a gift, those are out for sure. She currently lives with her own romance hero husband and two boys in Melbourne, Australia.

I usually am not a big fan of fantasy. But when Dani Hart asked me to do a trailer for her Arie Chronicles Series, I decided to give it a chance. I was completely blown away by this series.

The Arie Chronicles is like no other books I have read. We start off with Reality, where we are introduced to Arie. Arie knows that she is a little different. Nature seems to flock to her. The butterflies, the deer, a fox... She lives a normal life, with her best friend River by her side. Life is good. Until her 16th birthday, when her mom suddenly dies and her life all of a sudden has no meaning. River and his parents protect Arie. They are her constant. For two years, she lived in this black hole. Then on her 18th birthday, everything begins to change. Her feelings for River have started to surface again. But she meets a beautiful stranger, who suddenly is in her life, making her feel things she never felt before with River. She loves River, with all her heart but there is something about Ashe, that she just can't explain.

River's mom starts to unfold some of Arie's life. Giving her clues as to who she really is...and who River is. Arie finds out that she is not really human, but part of another realm. A realm where her father is...a man she has never met, but knows is the love of her mother's life.

There is so much in this magical, mystical world that will soon become Arie's world. There are many surprises for both Arie and her friends.

REALITY (Book 1 - The Arie Chronicles)

To be extraordinary was a fate Arie Belle had never imagined. She was comfortable living the simple life on a meadow protected by towering trees just outside of town. Her days were filled with naive pleasures and promising love until the unexpected and mysterious death of her mom.

Instantly, her world became dark and, at times, hopeless. Her only saving grace was her lifetime friendship with the boy next door, River, who was relentless in picking up the pieces of her broken future. Years of numbness were lifted when a beautiful stranger, Ashe, entered her world and took her soul to places it had never been, across realities trapped in the worlds of fairytales.

Would he be her savior, or would she find the strength within to be her own? Her journey begins on her eighteenth birthday and quickly unravels what she is and who killed her mother.

Her uncanny connection with nature and heightened sensations are just one of many secrets that unfold along the way. Will she find answers before the next full moon where her death is painted in the fate of the stars? Will she accept a scripted destiny or let the dark side of life suck her in?

DREAMS (Book 2 - The Arie Chronicles)

Being forced into a fantastical world was never in Arie’s life plan, but after spending time with her previously thought dead father, she’s falling in love with the world of enchantment. She’s determined to create a life for her newfound little sister, Amary, that is full of hope, tranquility, and love like her mother had done for her up until she died.

Losing her best friends, River and Starling, during the transition into her new life wasn’t easy on Arie, but a necessary sacrifice to ensure the safety of Amary and the natural balance of light and darkness. She is the chosen one who, through a choice of love, could cause the further destruction of balance, but is also the only one who could save them all.

Her journey is riddled with increased power, new discoveries, and a gut-wrenching decision that will further prove why she was chosen to lead the newly evolved. Arie’s mother always told her to follow her heart, and with the dedication to keep her mother’s spirit alive, she would let love lead and trust that the rest would follow.

Would love be enough to save the ones she protected? To save the balance of the worlds she relied on for support? Or would she lose it all because the price was too high?
