Losing Control by Jen Frederick

I’d do anything to keep my mother alive.

Anything, including ask Ian Kerr for help. I don’t know much about him, except that he has more money than some small countries. And he’s willing to spend it on me. Just one catch: there’s a string attached attached, and not just the one I feel pulling me into his arms and his bed. There’s also the plan for revenge he wants my help with.

Every time he says my name, it makes my body shiver and my heart stutter. I know he’s going to wreck me, know there won’t be anything left of me but lust and sensation by the time he’s done with me, but even though I can see the heartbreak coming towards me like a train, ready to crash into me, I can’t get out of the way. I want what he makes me feel. Want what he’s offering.

This may have started out as something to save my mother, but now…now it’s about what he makes me feel. I’m in danger of losing everything that’s important. Worse? Ian's whispered words and hot caresses are making me believe that's okay.

“Let me be perfectly frank with you, Victoria. There are lots of things that I’d like you to do for me. Some of them involve you on your knees. Others require you bent over a table. All of them require me to be between your legs. But I don’t pay for that.”

“No, I wouldn’t think you would,” I say faintly. No one has ever spoken to me in such a graphic and frank manner and I don’t know how to respond—at least not verbally. My body is reacting by getting hot and tight.

He nods then in confirmation that I’ve heard him. “I don’t dip my pen in the company ink. Nothing good comes of that. So let me ask you again. Are you certain you wouldn’t rather let me take you out to dinner and then home, where I would make you come so hard that you wouldn’t be able to remember your own name let alone that you have money troubles?”

I’m finding it difficult to breathe normally and it’s hard to remember exactly why I’m resisting him so hard. His hand has moved from my waist to my hip and his fingers are curling around my ass and pulling me close as possible despite the bike frame between us. I can even feel his erection against my hip. “The money troubles will still be there, regardless of my memory,” I manage to choke out.
His eyes narrow because he doesn’t like my rejections. “You should know that when small prey runs away, it only whets the appetite of a predator. Someday, Victoria Corielli, I’m going to get you to say yes.”

He pushes the bike frame upright and my body reluctantly follows.
“I’ll be in touch,” he says and then turns and walks away. I stare after him like a dumbass for at least five minutes.”

FATHER'S DAY EXCLUSIVE - Finding My Forever by Heidi McLaughlin

Everywhere I look, my friends are settling down - marriage, children, white picket fences; but not me. Marriage isn't in the cards for me. I’m a ladies man.

A rock star.

I was born and raised in the industry.

I love everything about my life, especially the attention from the women that my status brings me.
Women find me. I don’t chase. I know what they want and they know I’ll deliver.

But after one look, one touch, one night...
Now I’m the one doing the chasing.

I need to find a way to show her that I’m serious, that I can change.
I need to find a way to show her that I can love her fully, and only her.
I need to find a way to show her that she’s my forever.

The Beaumont Series: Finding My Forever
Jimmy’s Father’s Day
© Heidi McLaughlin, 2014

Father’s Day: a day where my wife will pamper me for giving her Eden. It’s only fair since I dote on her daily. I make sure each and every day is mother’s day for her. I’ve been waiting for this day since Eden was born. A day to relax, have a back massage and put my feet up on the coffee table. I know Jenna hates that, but today’s my day.

I roll over and pull Jenna’s pillow to my chest so I can inhale her scent, even though I know she hates it when I move her pillow. I thought it was strange at first, but I get it now. I like my pillow a certain way as well.

She’s already up with Eden, giving me a chance to sleep in. She loves me and I can only picture her downstairs in the kitchen with our daughter in her high chair, while she cooks me a traditional English breakfast. I can already imagine the bacon sizzling in the frying pan. I know she normally doesn't like to make black pudding and I’ve never ask her to, but maybe today she will. I can’t wait to taste the eggs, sausages, toast and of course, bacon. Everything is better with bacon. Maybe if I'm lucky, she'll add a fried tomato, mushrooms and some baked beans.

I get up and stretch. The sun is shining and I know it’s going to be an amazing today, one for Eden’s baby book.  I can hear her little laugh echoing throughout the house as if she knows I’m awake. I take my time as I walk down the stairs as if my wife and daughter are on tenterhooks, waiting for my arrival. I am their King; at least I like to think I am.

When I walk into the living room, Jenna is dressed for work and Little One is chewing on one of her many toys in her playpen, laughing as strings of drool create a bridge from her mouth to her toy. Jenna looks up at me and glares. I’m taken aback by the daggers she’s shooting in my direction.

“It’s nice of you to wake-up, Jimmy.” She picks up Eden who squeals in delight now that she’s in her mother’s arms. “Don’t worry about me having to work or anything.” Jenna brushes past me, with Eden on her hip and walks out of the house. I look around the house and wonder if I've missed something. Did I sleep through Father’s Day?

Walking into the kitchen, I don’t see any sign that breakfast has been made or see if there’s a cup a coffee waiting for me in the “World’s Best Dad” cup that I've hinted at so many times in the shops in the past month. Maybe she thinks Father’s Day is on a different day, like Mother’s Day is, but I've assured her it’s the same.

My heart aches at the thought that my wife is at work and my daughter is now with a babysitter. I’m here, all alone, without my family to celebrate. Why is Whimsicality even open today?

After sitting on the sofa, and feeling sorry for myself while I have my giant dish of pity, I decide that I can’t be here. I’d much rather be in the studio where I can be as loud as I want and not worry about offending my neighbours. Maybe a good dose of heavy metal with some screaming rage will get me out of this funk.

Who am I kidding, it won’t. I’m going to go write some sappy love song about how my wife forgot it was Father’s Day.

The drive over to Liam’s takes forever due to the roads being blocked off for the annual parade. Even the town of Beaumont celebrates its fathers with a parade. I could be there right now, but no, my wife is working and not thinking about how I’m spending my day alone. I’m trying not to be bitter, but it’s a lost cause. I don’t want to pick her up on it, but bloody hell, I want presents!

Liam’s house is dark, and I'm betting that they’re at the parade, as a family, waving their flags and eating candy floss. I run around the back and try to open the studio door, only to find it locked. I pull out my keys, searching for the studio key, and realise that it's missing. Banging my head against the door in frustration, I groan in annoyance. If I was a weaker man, I’d probably be crying right now.

The drive back home is worse than the drive to Liam’s. Now that the parade is over, traffic is a complete nightmare. The thought of my wife being so busy at work that she can’t even take a break runs through my mind. It would serve her right for forgetting my important day. The one day that allows fathers to wear the pants in the family.

The thought of sitting in our house, all day, doesn’t appeal to me. But as I sit here, parked in the drive all I want to do is go up to Eden’s room and curl up with one of her blankets. I take each porch step painfully slow. I know I need to suck it up and just deal with the fact that we’re not celebrating today, but I can’t.

When I open the door, loud shouts of “surprise” are yelled out and confetti is thrown in the air. My first thought is about how pissed off Jenna will be when she has to get out the vacuum cleaner. It takes me a minute to realise that she’s standing in front of me, again with Eden on her hip and both of my girls are wearing beautiful dresses and tiaras. My wife steps forward, leaving my bandmates and their families behind her and smacks her lips firmly against mine. Eden tugs at my shirt, wanting me to hold her.

Pulling Eden from Jenna, I hug her tightly as I fight back my emotions.

“You think we forgot don't you?” my wife says with laughter.

I nod, but quickly correct her. “You, yes, but not Little One. She’d never forget her daddy.”

Jenna rolls her eyes. “I wanted to make today special, Jimmy, because you’ve made me feel so special since the day we married that this was the only way I could show you how much you mean to me.”

This time I let the tears seep into my eyes as I pull her to me. Little One claps and is pulled from my arms so I can hold Jenna properly.

“Come on, Romeo, we have beer and food out back,” Liam laughs as he pats me on my shoulder. Harrison cocks his head towards the door before picking up both twins and leading the way outside. Alone with my wife, I hold Jenna’s hand in mine.

“I can’t believe you did this.”

“I love you. Eden and I would do anything for you.”

“I love you both so much.”

“Happy Father’s Day, Jimmy.” Jenna leans forward and gives me a gentle kiss leaving me with a subtle reminder of why I’m so in love with her.

Abel’s 1st Father’s Day
A Determinism Extra Scene By LK Collins

-Abel-

I haven’t felt a feeling like this in so many fucking years it’s unreal. As I stare at my precious daughter, I’m overcome with emotions. She’s only a few days old and I’m already in love. I can’t control the feelings inside of me as I watch how strong she is eating away at her bottle. A stray tear runs down my cheek, landing on my tattooed forearm.

It’s the early morning hours of my first Father’s Day and I’m grateful to be up this early with Adrean. I let Cara sleep in; she needs it, especially since she had such a rough labor. It took almost thirty hours for this little bundle of joy to be born and boy did she scare the shit out of us.

At one point the doctors couldn’t find her heartbeat. In that moment I swear to God, I almost lost it. Had is not been for Cara, I would have. Little Adrean finally stops drinking her bottle and I lean back in the chair, holding her up to get a good glimpse. She’s got the lightest hair any baby could have, that came from Cara and she has her lips, so big and full. She has my eyes, eyebrows, forehead, and cheeks. Well, damn near everything else about her reminds me of myself. Especially those eyes when I look deep into them, it’s like I’m searching into my own soul.

With my daughter resting comfortably on my shoulder, I begin to gently pat her back. It takes just a few moments ‘til I get a small burp out of her, then a big one. A smile crosses my face at the noise. I know what you’re thinking. She’s just like her mother.

She quiets down and I know I should lay her back in her bed, but having her in my arms feels so good. I never thought I wanted kids after I lost one many years ago, but now I know I was meant to be a dad and I can’t wait for Cara to get pregnant again. My eyes begin to feel heavy and I succumb to the tiredness, closing them for a few brief moments.

That is ‘til Adrean wiggles in my arms, causing me to frantically hold her tighter. Shit, I fell asleep. Glancing down, so did she. I look up at the entrance to the room and there’s my wife, my Cara. She’s the most beautiful in the mornings. So natural and carefree, she’s wearing one of my Denver fire t-shirts and comes over to me with the biggest smile on her face. I open my free arm and Cara sits on my lap.

“Happy Father’s day, baby.”

“Thank you; you have no idea how happy I am that Adrean is here today for me to spend my first father’s day with.

 “Me too. How is she?”

“You tell me,” I say as we both stare at her in my arms.

“She’s perfect. You know you shouldn’t sleep with her in your arms.”

“I wasn’t sleeping,” I protest.

“Sure you weren’t, I watched you. But regardless, you two are absolutely breathtaking.”

“And so are you. Why are you up so early?” I question.

“I missed you guys, plus it’s your day so I want to make sure you relax.”

“Thanks kitten, but I don’t need to relax. Do you want to hold her for a while and I’ll go cook breakfast?”

She shakes her head at me. “As much as I do,” she says leaning down kissing our daughter, then me. “I’m cooking for you, babe.”

My stomach growls at her words. I love her cooking; I always have and always will. Adrean yawns a little and moves in my arms. I kiss Cara again as she walks off. I thank God for these two amazing women in my life. I only wish my mother was here to see them, but I know deep down she’s looking down at me and proud as hell.

“Did you sense the pain from within the child?” Declan asked.

“It was greater than anything I have ever experienced. What was done to her is unforgivable. Her strength in not giving into the Shade is unfathomable. Normally, I would say the child has much to learn, but in this case, I fear we have much to learn from her.” Alaric answered with reverence.

Turning toward the pool Declan responded, “Emzara will know what to do. I will call for her as well.”

Looking into the water, he saw the fair-skinned child lying at Adela’s feet, her long copper locks strewn across a perfectly round face. Declan, the great black unicorn, whispered, “Happy birthday, little one. We will find out who or what has awoken you. You will be safe. No harm shall befall you. This is my solemn vow.”

“It is time dear friend.”  A voice shook him from his thoughts.

The Dragon and Unicorn Knights cast spell after spell into the pool.  Runes in ancient languages long since forgotten began to glow on her skin weaving a glowing web of magic around the sleeping girl. A faint orange light caught the Unicorn Knight’s eye. Amongst the glowing runes on her body, a faint symbol appeared on her wrist. Adela watched as the sleeping girl accepted the magic from the knights -- and strengthened it.

“She bears the mark of the Great Sacrifice. The myths are true. I knew she someone important when she came to the cave, but never in all these millennia did I think she was the Taken.” The Knights looked at one another as the reality of the young girl’s identity became clear.

He weaves his fingers with mine and guides me toward the windows.

“I used to come up here after my run in the mornings,” he says quietly as we look out at the horizon.

“So you worked out and then climbed the stairs? By choice?” I ask with a raised brow.

His throaty laugh echoes through the building as he steps closer to me. “Not all of us find exercise dumb. There are lots of activities that can be”—he coughs and smiles—“enjoyable.”

Jackson’s playful grin causes my eyes to widen and my cheeks to flush. Him and his mouth!

“Well, only if you do it right.” I smile and slap him across the chest.

“I always do it right,” he says as he walks past me.

“I’m sure you do.” I mutter beneath my breath hoping he doesn’t hear.

“What was that?”

Of course he heard me.

“Nothing. Just admiring the view.” I lie and stare out the window.

An amazing debut by Corrine Michaels. This will have you laughing, crying, swooning and sucked in from the first few pages. It will definitely take you on a ride of your emotions.

Jackson and Cat had off the charts chemistry. Witty and yet heart-wrenching at times. Their story is a masterfully woven story that amazes me for a first time author.

Can't wait for more from Ms. Micheals! 5 stars.
