Sustained by Emma Chase

Emma Chase, New York Times bestselling author of the Tangled series, returns with another installment of the Legal Briefs series! This book can be read as a standalone.

A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.

When you’re a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand.

Complications don’t work for me—I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will turn you on. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don’t pretend to be.

Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I’m going to Mommy & Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and am knee deep in a damn compost pit.

Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, and defend her…and the kids.

And that—that, I know how to do.

Excerpt: Meet Jake and Chelsea

Chelsea’s skin radiates the flushed, cheery glow of alcohol. Her eyes are hooded and happy but shield her thoughts, making her harder to read than usual. She leans back in her chair, regarding me, running her finger around the rim of her glass. “So if you started out as such a troubled youth, how did you become”-she gestures to me-“this? Successful. Honorable. Respectable.”
I pour the last of the wine into my glass. “ ‘Respectable’ is probably pushing it a little bit…but the story goes like this: I was fifteen, running around with some real dipshits. Older guys. One night we thought it’d be brilliant to break into a sporting goods store, because that’s the kind of losers we were, only I didn’t know one of them was carrying. He ended up shooting a guard in the leg.”
            Chelsea gasps just a little.
And my cock twitches a lot.
“We ran out the back, right into the arms of a waiting squad car.” I shake my head at the idiot I was. “The prosecutor wanted to charge me as an adult, send me away for serious time-and he could have. I had a hot temper and a record, and aside from my mother, I thought the whole goddamn world was my enemy.”
Chelsea leans forward, completely enthralled. “So what happened?”
“The Honorable Atticus Faulkner happened. He was the juvenile judge on my case-a big, mean, scary son of a bitch. And he…thought he saw something worthy in me. So he kept me in juvenile court- gave me community service and probation, to be supervised by the hard-ass himself.” I chuckle. “At the time, I thought the judge was doing me a favor-going easy on me.”
            “He wasn’t?”
“Depends on your definition of ‘easy.’ For the next few years I trimmed grass by hand with fucking garden shears. I carried boulders, scrubbed floors, reshingled the goddamn roof-real Mr. Miyagi, wax-on-wax-off kind of shit. He rode my ass-nothing was ever good enough. It made me want to do everything better, just to fucking spite the bastard. And then…he had me start doing research. Studying case law, drafting briefs, analyzing opinions-it was fascinating to me. When my probation was up, the Judge offered me a job. By then I’d gotten my head out of my ass and was actually scoring decent grades in high school. With his recommendation and a shitload of student loans, I got through college, then law school…and that’s all she wrote.”
“I think that’s amazing,” she says softly, watching me.
“Yeah-the Judge is a pretty amazing guy.”
Her lips slide into a gentle smile and something like awe shines in her eyes. “I was talking about you.”
I’m hardly ever taken off guard. Surprised. But this stunning wisp of a woman just did exactly that.
Chelsea turns her head toward the piano music floating in from the other room. “I love this song.”
            It’s a Van Morrison cover-“Crazy Love.”
I toss my napkin on the table and move to stand next to her, holding out my hand. “Would you like to dance?” And I can tell I just surprised her too. The simple delight on her face when her hand slides into mine makes me want to do it again.
We step out onto the edge of the dance floor. I wrap my arm around her lower back, holding her tight and flush against me. One of Chelsea’s hands rests on my shoulder, toying with the hair at the nape of my neck. The other is clasped in mine just over my heart. We sway, just looking at each other for a few moments.
“I was going to ask you to dance,” she tells me. “But you don’t seem like the type who would’ve said yes.”
“I’m not,” I answer, staring at her lush moth. “I was just using it as an excuse to be closer to you.”
She give me love, love, love, love, crazy love.
She sighs, practically sinks into my arms. Chelsea’s head fits against my chest like she was made to be there. My chin rests against her hair, and I smell clean and sweet vanilla.
            “Hey, Jake?”
            “Yeah?”
Chelsea lifts her head from my chest. “You don’t need an excuse.”
I lower my head at the same moment she reaches up for me. And her lips-fuck-they’re warms, soft, and move with such innocent daring, I’m practically trembling. Was it just last night that I first kissed her? It seems longer ago. I cup her cheek, stroking her skin with my thumb, kissing deeper, tasting wine and the moan I’ve been obsessing over all night.
And the absolute craziest part of it all? I haven’t gotten laid in three goddamn weeks, but if this is all we do-kissing, with her against me, my arms around her-I’ll be grinning in the morning like a guy who banged a whole sorority house full of cheerleaders.
I’m hoping for more. I want everything-all the secret, sweetest parts of her-but if this is all I get to have tonight? It’s enough.
She give me love, love, love, love, crazy love…

Emma Chase knows how to write characters that are funny, charming, sexy and make you want more of their story. Sustained is the second book in the Legal Briefs Series but can be read as a standalone (although I highly recommend reading Overruled as soon as possible!)

Jake Becker is a high power defense attorney in Washington, DC. He's known for being hard nosed, cut-throat and callous in and out of court. And the thing is he's perfectly fine with it. That is until he meets Chelsea McQuaid. After her rebellious nephew finds himself in a heap of trouble, Jake's defenses slide when he meets the frazzled, yet gorgeous, Chelsea. Chelsea is only 22 and has found herself the guardian of her 5 nieces and nephews. After being thrown into the position - trying to help the kids work through their own grief, while putting her own aside, she is desperate for help. Before Jake knows what hit him, he's volunteering to take the kids to activities and having family nights with the whole gang.

Jake soon realizes he may be over his head. As Chelsea and Jake's friendship turns into more, will Jake be able to defend his own actions while still trying to reach for his own lifelong goals? Or have they changed?

This whole book was fun. The kids break off a piece of your heart and never give it back. Jake is funny and sexy and protective of the kids and Chelsea. It's always fun seeing someone who is so tough on the outside become a big teddy bear when surrounded by people he loves.

HIGHLY recommend this series and SUSTAINED. #LoverOrLawyer... I guess you will have to read it to find out.

Never Say Never by Nicole Edwards
A Sniper 1 Security Novel, Book 2. M/M Romance

Ryan Trexler has devoted his entire life to his family’s security business. And now that he’s slated to take over the reins for the company, RT knows that his life is only going to get more complicated. Add in the fact that he’s lusting over one of the men who works for him and RT knows that there are some serious tough times ahead.

Zachariah Tavoularis—nicknamed Z—has been employed by Sniper 1 Security for a decade. Despite being known as the most loyal enforcer outside of family, Z also has a reputation of being quite the playboy, though that was based more on rumor than fact. When an assignment comes up that forces the two of them to work together, Z knows it’s time to show RT he’s not the man he thinks he is.

Can they complete the mission, despite the fact that it puts them in a tenuous situation, bringing them closer than either of them ever expected? And will Z allow RT to convince him that they can never be together, no matter how much they both want it?

Never Say Never (Sniper 1 Security, #2)
(unedited excerpt - subject may change prior to publication)

“How’s the business goin’?” Travis asked as he steered Ryan toward a booth near the front of the bar.

“Busy,” Ryan answered.

“That’s a good thing, right?”

“Of course.” Ryan smiled as they approached Travis’s wife Kylie and their husband Gage. “Good to see y’all again.”

“Same here. Have a seat.” Gage motioned toward the opposite side of the table as he slid his other arm over Kylie’s shoulders and pulled her close while Travis grabbed a chair.
Flipping it around backward, Travis straddled the seat, placing his elbow on the table. Ryan didn’t miss that Travis’s other hand disappeared under the table, likely resting on Kylie’s leg if he had to guess.

“We weren’t sure you’d be able to make it,” Travis said.

Ryan knew he could always be called back to work at any time, depending on the case, but he didn’t need to tell Travis as much. The man ran a multi-million dollar resort, so he understood. “I’m glad I could.”

“How’s Z doin’?” Kylie asked, peering toward the back of the room where Z had been pulled away by his friends a few minutes before.

“You know Z. Nothing gets him down.”

Gage smiled. “Seems he’s quite interested in you.”

Knowing better, Ryan still turned to glance in Z’s direction. He thought for sure he’d be busted stealing a look, but Z was paying him no attention.
“And you’re quite interested in him,” Kylie noted.

Ryan’s head snapped back around to face her. He was about to fire off a rebuttal, but her smile silenced him.

“Leave the poor man alone,” Travis injected. “He’s in denial.”

Ryan snorted.

“I concur,” Gage added.

“Why’s everybody gangin’ up on me?” Ryan questioned, unable to hide the smile.
“Seemed like the thing to do.” Travis took a sip of his beer.

Epilogue
October 25th, 2007
(Unedited, copy written @ MJ Fields)
I look in the mirror one last time, my hair is longer on top that it is on the sides. The gel I use to style it makes it look messy and black instead of dark brown. With my black boots I stand six foot three. I having spent an hour at the gym every night after school, I finally have great definition. I’m stage ready.

I walk out on stage with my guitar strung around my neck, pick in hand, waiting for the nerves to consume me. But they don’t.

Why? Because I’m a damn legend, that’s why. The stadium is sold out and the crowd is going wild.

“Hello New Jersey!” I hold the mic out for the crowd’s roar. They give me exactly what I want.

“I am Memphis Black, lead singer and guitarist extraordinaire for”—fuck I hate this part. The band, what the hell is the band’s name?

“Black Hawks,” my sister Madison whispers.

“The Black Hawks!” I yell to the ‘crowd.’

“That name is so lame.” I hear my sister’s friend Tally giggle.

“You two, out.”

“No, you said if we video taped this, you would…”

“Out!”

“Come on, it’s our first dance, we need to learn how!” Madison stomps her foot.

“Well, you didn’t hold up your end of the deal, now did you?” I lift the guitar strap over my head.

“Come on, please,” Madison says, eyes huge.

“Yeah please,” Tally joins her.

I consider telling them to fuck off, but they’d tell Mom. I consider a simple ‘no,’ but they’d tell her that, too. So I choose the safest answer: “Fine. But you both have to shut the hell up.”

Tally covers her mouth, looking horrified. Girl is a train wreck in epic, adolescent proportion. She has kinky brown curls and a ribbon always wrapped around her head. Freckles bridge her nose and dot her face, and she always wears cartoon character tee shirts, today it’s Care Bears.

“What now, Tales?” I huff.

“You said—”

“Hell?” I laugh.

“Yeah, you did.” She giggles again.

“You know what? I think the both of you should just stay home. All freshman girls do at a dance is stand in a corner, giggle, and look like dweebs.” I look at my sister. “Mads, a boy asks you to dance? You’ll start laughing and snorting.” Next, I point at her friend. “Tales, you’ll get some big ass grin.” I roll my eyes when she covers her mouth again—little girl can’t handle a curse word to save her life. “Just keep smiling and laughing, and they’ll think there’s something wrong up in those crazy heads of yours. Besides, you’re both in that—I don’t know, awkward stage: braces, boobs just budding....”

Tally covers her mouth again while Madison starts to get really pissed off.

“I mean, look at that hair. Mads, you’re so used to wearing a ball cap you have permanent hat head. And you,” I can’t resist taking one more shot at Tally. “How the hell are you gonna get a comb through that kinky mess before Saturday?”

That’s when Madison finally screams for Mom. Tally just looks at me like that cat from the cartoon, the one with the big green guy. Shrek? Yeah Shrek. Puss , Puss in Boots. That’s what her face looks like.

Looking back at her, I almost feel kind of bad for giving them a hard time.

Mom comes in then and gives me the third degree, She tells me, ‘Girls are sensitive when they’re going through changes,' and that I should ‘be more thoughtful.’

Finally, I can’t take it anymore. “Okay Mom, fine. I will buy into their little girl fantasies about that girl, with the blue dress, the one with the mice that turn into horses—”

“Cinderella.” In spite of herself, my Mom laughs.

“Yeah. Her.”

Her face goes from amused to suspicious. Mom face. “What exactly are they doing in your room, anyway?”

“They were supposed to be taping my performance.” I try not to smile as she gives me that look. I know exactly what she’s about to say—that my rock star fantasies are just as lame as some dumb fairy tale with talking mice. “It’s not the same thing, Mom. This is my dream, something I can actually make into a career one day.”

“I know, Memphis.” She pats my back, smiling. “But maybe their dream is to dance.”

a17fbe62d0310ad8986c7c.L._V367042270_SY470_USA Today Bestselling author MJ FIELDS grew up on a farm surrounded by her extended family. She attributes her ability to write a realistic male character to the fact that she had a large amount of male influences in her life... that and the dirty joke books she would steal from her uncles or the farms hired help and run away laughing while they chased her yelling obscenities trying to get her to return the books before her God fearing mother found out and spanked her butt with a flyswatter. No she wasn't physically abused, she very openly admits that she deserved every imprint left on her ass from the flyswatter. (Could this be why she loves tattoos? Maybe.) After each spanking she would run away, usually through the fields and down to the falls where she would laugh because it really didn't hurt, while she read the book she had stolen and stashed when no one was looking.

When she wasn't misbehaving she was working side by side with her male family members learning what hard work, loyalty, and dedication was all about, spending time with her grandmothers who taught her all about love and blind faith, or dancing and singing in the kitchen with her four siblings while her mother gave them all a childhood filled with love and encouragement to use their imagination and follow their dreams.

Her love of writing was in full swing by age eight. Together with her cousins, she wrote a 'newspaper' that they sold for ten cents to family members. Her school years were spent hanging in the principal’s office or a shit list somewhere. Weekends she could be found spending time with her family or hanging out with more males than females, in the fields with tailgates down and a bonfire burning while music played loudly in the background. Some of those times 'allegedly' had alcohol involvement, she will neither confirm nor deny. As an adult she self-published her first New Adult romance in January 2013.

Today she has completed six self-published series. The Love series, The Wrapped series, The Burning Souls series, The Norfolk series, The Men of Steel series, and The Ties of Steel series

She also just released a book she wrote with five, yes five, other authors. It is her darkest book to date. The Original Sin is available now. MJ has been told by several readers that they had never read a book that involved a Prince Albert piercing and although she cannot claim the title, it is said she may possibly be "The Pioneer of the Pierced Penis", in the New Adult book world, of course. (Naughty naughty.) MJ is a hybrid author who loves her readers and tries her best to write as much as she can for them. She believes she has the best reader’s crew in the entire world (many of us agree. Forever Steel baby). She publishes an Indie book almost every month. She is also signed with a traditional publisher, Loveswept, Penguin Random House, for her co-written series The Caldwell Brothers with Chelsea Camaron. Hendrix is available now. Morrison, the second in the series, will be released on December 22nd, 2015. And Jagger, the third of the series, will be released on April 19th, 2016. Her next Indie series is Rockers of Steel. Book one, Memphis, releasing late August or early September 2015. Each can be read as a stand-alone, but really who doesn't want MORE STEEL!

There is always something new in the works and she has stories to write for her readers for years to come. Her alpha male characters are some of the best in the industry, but remember before they fall many of them can be considered crude, rude, pierced, and tattooed. (Just the way we like them!) If you are offended by the 'F' word she advises you either take a pass on her books or pull up your big girl thong, sit back with a glass of wine and enjoy the ride. If you can't handle the heat you should stay out of the ... well the Steel and Sin book worlds anyways. If heat is all you're looking for she insists you be warned the heat will draw you in, but the heart, depth, and emotion in the books will keep you coming back for more. MJ was a former small business owner who closed shop after the success of the Men of Steel series so she could write full time.

MJ Lives in central New York surrounded by family, friends and fur babies. Ninety percent of the time life is a noisy, beautiful, chaotic mess but in the evening hours when everyone is tucked in tight you will find her with a laptop in her comfy chair writing about the men we dream will step off the pages and into our lives. MJ believes in love and that there is someone for everyone. She is represented by Marisa Corvisiero

EXCERPT

I climb the fence quickly and wrap my arm around her shoulders to guide her back to the car. “What are you doing out here? I told you to stay in the car.”

“I was worried about you,” she says, her teeth chattering as I open the passenger door for her. “Is someone going to let us out?”

 “No one was there.”

Her eyes widen. “We’re stuck in here?”

I shake my head as I try to come up with an answer better than the truth, then I remember I promised to never lie to Rory again. “There may be a groundskeeper who’ll come by tonight and let us out. But if not, then yes. We’re stuck here for the night.”

Her mouth drops open in utter horror. “I’m sorry. It’s all my fault.”

“Bullshit. I could have carried you to the car and forced you to leave. It’s not your fault. And, hey, look on the bright side,” I reply, raising my voice to be heard over the sound of the rain battering the top of my car, and Rory looks at me as if I’m insane to even suggest there’s a bright side. “Spending the night in a cemetery will probably be the ultimate test of our friendship.”

She rolls her eyes as she climbs into the passenger seat. “You call that a bright side? I call that a nightmare.”

REVIEW Discovering Delilah by Melissa Foster

Discovering Delilah
24779471After the death of her parents on the day of her college graduation, Delilah Armstrong thought she could finally follow her heart and come out to her closest friends, but the guilt of going against her parents’ beliefs haunts her. The feelings she has for her best friend, Ashley, are stronger than anything she’s felt before, but Delilah has never even kissed a girl, and fear stops her at every turn.

Ashley Carver promised herself that she would never again date another girl who wasn’t out, but that was before she met intoxicatingly sweet and sexy Delilah.

When another girl offers to teach Delilah the ropes, it changes Delilah’s whole world and gives her the courage to go after the only girl she really wants. But coming out isn’t as easy as Delilah imagined, and moving past her parents’ death and the feelings of guilt she is left with is even harder. The intense passion between Ashley and Delilah is too strong to deny, but coming together means risking everything.

Discovering Delilah is an edgy, evocative, romantic story of friendship, family, and the courage to love. New Adult Romance, LGBT

Delilah grew up in a conservative household. One that she felt would never be accepting of her acceptance of being gay. She's known for a while that she liked girls more than boys and so she put up the front, with a fake boyfriend and never dating much less kissing any girls. The only people that know that she is gay is her twin brother and his girlfriend Cassidy.

Finally ready to tell her parents, she lets them know on graduation night, leaving her parent speechless and leaving Delilah angry that her parents are so unacceptable to her life. Then the unthinkable happens - her parents dying in a car accident on their way home from graduation and Delilah never getting to talk to them or confront them about how their silence made her feel.

Even with her parents gone, Delilah has a hard time coming out of the closet. The only thing is she has feelings for her friend Ashley and she has no way of knowing how to even approach the relationship and asking for more.

Delilah's story is an amazing journey of self discovery, forgiveness and learning to live for the first time.

I loved Delilah and Ashley and we get to see the whole gang in the Harborside series too. Love is love and finding that love can send you over the moon, but first and foremost you need to learn to love yourself and be happy with who you are. And this journey takes you through a rollercoaster of twists and turns. I can't wait for more from Harborside Nights!
